The Settlers Of Catan
The Settlers Of Catan
The Settlers of Catan is a vastly popular and enjoyable board game that even now creates pleasure for a multitude of players, both new and old. Introduced in 1995 in Germany, it is now translated into 30 different languages and has found a fan base that spreads the globe. Furthermore, it has won first place in the German Game Prize competition – no easy task. It then went on to achieve the impressive title of Game of the Year in Germany in it’s very first year, bringing even more publicity and approval, establishing it as a true winner in the board game industry. It is unique in that as a family game, no one is eliminated from the play, which allows everyone to continue to take part right until the end, and allows for many a dramatic comeback form underdog players, and lets them reach achievable goals. This innovative board game is, therefore, an inclusive and fun experience for everyone.
The board game has many elements to it, and fans of the Settlers of Catan love the combination of strategy and luck. You can develop your bargaining power, thinking many steps ahead and organising your own plots in order to reach your goals, which leads to as much scheming and sneakiness as it does open fun. There is no typical luck of the draw (or rather, the dice): to achieve success you need to carefully craft a plan, yet remain flexible enough to deal with the unexpected. A good strategy is the key, and a co-ordinated plan will serve any player well.
The Settlers of Catan board game takes place on the island of Catan, where each player represents a settler who is working to establish a profitable colony there. Players endeavour to create connections between one another such as roads and towns, which are all purchased and developed with resources. The resources are spread throughout the board, and as some areas are exclusive, players must do their best to reach them and utilise each area that is needed in order for them to achieve a personal need or goal. Naturally, demand often outstrips supply, so players can agree with one another to trade resources. However, should a player strike a territorial claim to one of these resource-rich areas, the resources can be temporarily robbed until that player moves on.
There’s a twist though. Resource cards can be used to purchase development cards, and with each development the user is at an advantage and inches them closer and closer to victory. This is essential in the competitive atmosphere generated as people battle for prime locations. As an established settlement, they can even up their earnings by trading with the bank at a two-to-one or even three-to-one ratio.
Essentially, the path to winning The Settlers Of Catan lies in its point system. Each player should try to build as many settlements as they can, each counting as one point each. As settlements are upgraded to cities, they count for two points. Being the highest score in such elements as road building and army size also award points. The first one to hit 10 points wins the whole game and is truly the lord or lady of the Catan island.
Incorporating, entrepreneurship, financial savvy, strategy and even a bit of politics, The Settlers Of Catan appeal to a wide audience and provide an immersive and exciting experience that far surpasses many traditional board games. Be sure to check it out!
